A Scent of the Sea: Why Aldeburgh is the perfect place for my business

As a candle maker, my work is deeply intertwined with my surroundings. The scents I create, the ethos of my brand, and my commitment to sustainability are all a reflection of the place I call home. And for me, the best place to be is Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

Living here, I'm constantly reminded of the power and beauty of nature. The wild shingle beach, the big Suffolk skies, and the ever-present sound of the sea aren’t just beautiful backdrops; they are a constant source of inspiration and a reminder of my environmental responsibility.

A community of artists and makers

One of the things I love most about Aldeburgh is the amazing community of local artists and artisans. This isn’t just a tourist town; it's a place where people live, work, create and genuinely care about their environment. From the galleries and independent shops to the iconic ‘Scallop’ sculpture on the shore, there’s a real appreciation for art and nature. There is a strong emphasis on quality, sustainability, and supporting each other.

As a small business owner, this sense of community is invaluable. I’m not just a person behind a brand; I'm a neighbour, a customer, and a friend. The support for local independent businesses is incredible, and it's this kind of conscious consumerism that allows businesses like mine to grow.

Natural inspiration

My candles are a product of this place.  "Moondance" with its earthy notes, is inspired by the walks I take through the nearby Suffolk countryside. "High Tide" captures the fresh, salty air that I breathe every day. Living so close to an area of outstanding natural beauty means I'm surrounded by elements that inspire my work.

The connection to nature also reinforces my commitment to using environmentally friendly materials. It feels right that my rapeseed wax, sourced from British farms, is a product of the same land that I'm so lucky to be a part of. The use of recyclable glass jars isn't just a business decision; it’s a personal commitment to keeping this beautiful coastline clean for future generations.

A perfect pace of life

Running a small business is demanding, but living in Aldeburgh provides the perfect balance. The peaceful rhythm of life here allows me to focus on my craft without the constant pressure and impact of a big city. The slow, intentional pace of the town is reflected in the way I work—every candle poured by hand, with care and attention to detail.

In Aldeburgh, I can walk to the beach to clear my head, chat with friends on the high street, and be inspired by the natural world every single day. This isn’t just where I live; it's an integral part of my brand's story. It's a place that not only provides me with inspiration but also aligns with the core values of my environmentally conscious business. And for that, I am truly grateful.
